Research

Our lab explores how the electronic structure of matter can be deliberately controlled to realize and manipulate exotic quantum phenomena. We grow atomically precise oxide films by molecular beam epitaxy and watch their electronic bands form in real time with in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).

Electronic structures + Control Exploring exotic phenomena
전자 구조 + 제어 희귀 현상 탐구

물질의 성질은 그 안의 전자들이 어떻게 배열되고 움직이는가, 즉 "전자 구조(Electronic Structure)"에 의해 결정됩니다. ESC Lab은 이 전자 구조를 원자 단위에서 정밀하게 설계하고 제어함으로써, 초전도·자성·금속-절연체 전이와 같은 양자 현상의 근원을 파헤치는 연구를 합니다. 우리의 목표는 단순히 물질을 관찰하는 것을 넘어, 원하는 물성을 가진 물질을 직접 설계하는 것입니다. 이를 위해 두 개의 축으로 연구를 진행합니다.

원자 한 층씩 쌓아 올리기 — 박막 성장
(Thin-film Synthesis)
산화물 분자선 증착 장비(Oxide MBE)를 이용해 원자 한 층 한 층을 정밀하게 쌓아, 자연에는 존재하지 않는 고품질 양자 물질을 직접 만들어냅니다.
전자의 지도를 그리다 — 전자 구조 측정 (Electronic Structure Characterization)
각분해 광전자 분광법(ARPES)으로 물질 속 전자들의 에너지와 운동량을 직접 들여다봅니다. 이를 위해 미국·유럽·아시아의 방사광 가속기와 국내 장비를 활용합니다.
우리만의 무기: in-situ MBE-ARPES 통합 시스템
ESC Lab은 초고진공 환경에서 갓 성장시킨 박막을 공기에 단 한 번도 노출시키지 않고 곧바로 ARPES 장비로 옮겨 측정하는 통합 시스템을 구축하고 있습니다. 이를 통해 양자 현상의 기원을 원자·전자 수준에서 규명하고, 도핑, strain, gating 같은 외부 제어로 물성을 설계하는 물질 공학(Material Engineering) 연구를 수행합니다.

우리가 던지는 질문들

ESC Lab은 하나의 물질군에 머무르지 않고, 전자 구조 제어라는 공통의 렌즈로 다양한 양자 현상에 접근합니다. 현재 우리가 탐구하는 대표적인 주제는 다음과 같습니다.

초전도의 기원을 찾아서
Nickelates
최근 전 세계적으로 가장 뜨거운 물질 중 하나인 니켈레이트 초전도체를 산화물 MBE로 정밀하게 성장시켜 연구합니다. 서로 다른 두 계열(infinite-layer, Ruddlesden-Popper series)의 초전도 메커니즘이 같은지 다른지, 그리고 차원 제어(dimensional confinement)와 계면 전하 이동(charge transfer)으로 궤도 선택적 모트 상태(orbital-selective Mott phase)를 어떻게 조율할 수 있는지 파고듭니다.
자성과 금속-절연체 전이
Transition-metal Oxides
루테네이트, 크로뮴 산화물, 이리데이트 등 4d·5d 전이금속 산화물에서 표면과 계면이 만들어내는 새로운 전자 상태를 탐구합니다. 도핑(K-dosing), 이종접합(heterostructure), 대칭성 깨짐을 통해 자성, 강한 스핀-궤도 결합, 그리고 최근 주목받는 알터마그네티즘(altermagnetism)까지 폭넓게 다룹니다.
강상관 전자계와 위상 물질
Flat Band & Topology
카고메(kagome)·리브(Lieb) 격자가 만드는 평탄 밴드(flat band), 콘도 물질(Kondo materials)의 무거운 전자, 그리고 위상 초전도체(topological superconductor) 후보 물질을 연구합니다. 높은 상태 밀도와 위상학적으로 보호된 표면 상태가 어떤 새로운 물성을 낳는지, ARPES로 직접 확인합니다.
계면과 저차원 전자계
2DEG & Heterostructures
산화물 계면에 형성되는 2차원 전자 기체(2DEG)와 초박막 이종접합에서, 전자의 파동함수가 실공간에서 어떻게 갇히고 궤도별로 어떻게 분포하는지를 규명합니다. 이러한 현상 탐구는 차세대 산화물 전자소자 설계의 기반이 됩니다.
